Justin Bieber earned his sixth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart when his Purpose claimed the top spot for the week.
According to Billboard, the album sold 649,000 equivalent album units in its first week.
With that, Purpose became he largest opening for an album since Billboard began tracking equivalent units in December 2014 topping Drake’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late, which launched with 535,000 units.
Purpose is the biggest sales week for an album since Taylor Swift’s 1989 debuted with 1.29 million last year.
One Direction Made In The A.M. came in at #2 with 459k sold.
Hip-hop claimed the #3 and #4 spots. Logic’s The Incredible True Story also made its debut at No. 3 with 135,000 units (118,000 in album sales). Jeezy’s seventh disc Church in These Streets claimed No. 4 with 107,000 units (98,000 in pure sales), becoming his seventh straight top 10 album.
None of this will matter next week or for a few months after this when Adele’s 25 finishes tallying up numbers. Right now, she’s reported to top the charts next week with more that 2.5 million copies.
