As everyone descends upon Austin for a week of music at SXSW, there are a plethora of both official and unofficial showcases featuring artists from all over the world. Over the next few days we will introduce our readers to a few talents we have our eyes on. Up first, Joie Kathos
From appearing on Oxygen Network’s, ‘The Glee Project,’ where she made top 15 female finalists out of 45,000, to being sponsored by Red Bull, winning ‘Best New Artist’ at the 2013 Philly Hip Hop Awards, and now being the only artist to make the Mayor of Philadelphia dance, Joie Kathos is proving that she deserves her spot every chance she gets.
“I have nothing to prove to anyone, but I have everything to share. My talents were given to me to use as tools to help inspire, empower, and enlighten people. So that’s why I do what I do.” –Joie
Born, Jordan Shannon, and hailing from West Philadelphia, Ms. Kathos has been performing since the age of 3, and started her career as a full-time dancer while attending the Creative and Performing Arts High School of Philadelphia. She wrote raps and made beats in her free time, but during the day she trained in all styles of dance including ballet, modern, jazz, tap, hip hop, and broadway. Her dance skills opened up opportunities for her to perform all around the country, but as time went on Joie grew more passionate about the art of music and attended University of New Haven for Music and Sound Recording, and began crafting herself as a lyricist, writer, and producer.
After years of performing at some of Philly’s most historic venues like The Trocadero, Theater of Living Arts, and The Rotunda, Joie earned the title Best New Female Artist at the 2013 Philly Hip Hop Awards, and was seen on Oxygen Network’s The Glee Project: Season 2, where she made it to the Top 15 female finalists out of 45,000 people competing for a role on Glee. Kathos is schedule to be releasing new music Spring 2016.
Joie will be performing on the No Stix No Seeds stage in Austin Thursday March 17, 2016 at Sledge Hammer on Sixth (503 E. Sixth St.). RSVP for free admission at http://NOSTIXNOSEEDS.com
