Jay-Z’s upstart sports agency has received another big boost, as a source confirmed to ESPN on Friday night that Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant will leave his current agent to join Roc Nation Sports.

The source said Durant believes he doesn’t need a contract agent now because he signed an $85 million extension with the Thunder in 2010 that will take him through the 2015-16 season. Instead, Durant — already one of the most marketable players in the league — has told those close to him that he wants to increase his brand.

A spokesman for Roc Nation Sports told ESPN that Durant is not currently a client. It’s unknown whether Jay-Z will wait until he sells his small ownership share in the Brooklyn Nets — it’s believed he owns between one-fifth and one-fifteenth of 1 percent of the team — before signing Durant. A source tells ESPN that Jay-Z’s ownership sale has not yet been completed.

If Jay-Z is just doing marketing work for Durant, he might be able to steer clear of NBA rules that would prohibit him from representing a player and owning a piece of a team.

Durant has endorsement deals with Nike, Sprint, Gatorade, Skullcandy headphones, BBVA Compass, 2K Sports and Panini America. This will be Durant’s third agent in his six years in the league. He was represented by Goodwin Sports and, most recently, Landmark Sports.

His departure from Landmark and move to Roc Nation Sports was first reported by the Sports Business Journal.

Since announcing his intention to start a sports agency just a couple of months ago, Jay-Z has signed some impressive clients, including New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano, New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith and former Notre Dame guard Skylar Diggins, who was recently selected third by the Tulsa Shock in the WNBA draft.

Other athletes who are said to be interested in signing with Roc Nation Sports, which has a relationship with Creative Artists Agency (CAA), include New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz and Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson.

DeSean Jackson

Philadelphia Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson has fired his notoriously aggressive agent Drew Rosenhaus. According to several reports, Jackson is eyeing the possibility of signing to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Sports agency.

USA Today got a big scoop after a person close to Jackson spoke to the publication on the condition of anonymity. The source said that Jackson has expressed interest in signing with the growing Roc Nation Sports, which currently represents New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano, WNBA rookie Skylar Diggins and New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith.

The Philadelphia Inquirer focused on the story yesterday (June 3) and reported that Jackson has to wait five days before speaking with potential agents per NFL rules. Making the Pro Bowl in both the 2009 and 2010 seasons, Jackson hasn’t produced to that level since. In 2012, Jackson missed the last five games of the season due to broken ribs.

Jackson signed a $51 million dollar deal in March 2012 and while it appeared impressive, only $15 million of the deal is guaranteed. The person who spoke with USA Today also speculated that Jackson hopes to align with Jay-Z to gain some hopeful mentoring in pushing his own Jaccpot Records label along.

First he jumps into sports management, then he ignites ire from many with his trips to Cuba, now he’s leaving Sony. You got to say, Jay-Z has had an eventful last we days.

Universal Music Group said Monday it had inked a multiyear deal with rapper Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter to house his music label Roc Nation, snagging the coveted rights to release Mr. Carter’s next album along with the forthcoming records of other top-selling artists including Rihanna.

Mr. Carter said the deal allowed his five-year-old Roc Nation to “continue to operate as an independent label with the strength, power and reach of the best major.” Universal didn’t disclose the financial terms of the deal.

The move is a return to Universal for Mr. Carter, 43 years old, who served as president of Universal’s Island Def Jam Music Group from 2004 until late 2007

To release Roc Nation records, Mr. Carter struck distribution deals with both Warner Music Group’s Atlantic Records and Sony Music Entertainment.

Says Shawn:

We are looking forward to working with Lucian [Grainge, Chairman and CEO of UMG] and the incredible team he’s assembled at Universal.  We would like to applaud Lucian for collaborating with us to strike a new age deal.  This agreement presents a unique opportunity for Roc Nation’s artists-being able to continue to operate as an independent label with the strength, power and reach of the best major.  I look forward to a long and prosperous collaboration with UMG.  It feels good to be home.”

Roc Nation already has a “worldwide publishing administration” deal with Warner Music.

cano1

Darrel Rovell just announced that New York YankeesRobinson Cano will be the first client of Roc Nation Sports. Roc Nation formed a partnership with Creative Artists Agency to get into sports representation.

Cano, who has left agent Scott Boras, is in the final year of a six-year, $57 million deal with the team.

With Transitions marketing, Roc Nation will be able to allow Cano a ton of opportunities outside of sports. This is a major look for Hov and Roc Nation. Can Lebron be too far behind? Time will tell.

Hip hop fans have been obsessed with Illuminati rumors for the past few years now. Roc Nation rapper J. Cole admitted in a recent interview that he was one of those people convinced every upper-echelon rapper was a part of some evil secret society prior to joining Jay-Z’s label.

“You know, it’s crazy. Before I got a deal and became apart of the industry, I was one of those people,” Cole told The Smoking Section. “Like, I wasn’t on it all the time, but I’m a conspiracy theorist. Like, I believed those videos. So there were times where I’d look at a video that’s like, ‘Jay-Z, a member of The Illuminati!’ and I would be like, ‘Ohhhh! Like, yoooo! How is…’ and then you meet him, and you see how things work and you’re like, ‘Nah, man. That’s bogus.’ That’s somebody who’s so far away from the truth and what’s actually happening, just creating something. They’re probably high. But nah, it’s not true.”

kylierocnation

According to hiphopblog.com veteran pop star Kylie Minogue has joined up with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. News of the signing broke first on  Life + Times , with it being confirmed that the Australian singer is the latest Roc signee. It hasn’t been determined if the deal was for management or being an artist.

The statement read like this:

“Roc Nation would like to welcome Aussie singer, recording artist, songwriter, actress and designer Kylie Minogue to the family,” read the statement. “In a career now spanning 25 years, Kylie has released 11 studio albums, two live CDs, eight live concert DVDs, a greatest hits double album, and multiple video packages. She has released over 50 hit singles worldwide, including the Grammy-winning Come Into My World, and has sold more than 68 million albums worldwide. Needless to say, we’re excited to have Kylie join the Roc fam.”

timbalandandjayz

It’s official. Super-producer Timbaland is now officially a member of Roc Nation. Earlier today Life + Times reported that Tim officially joined Roc Nation as an in-house producer. This should be a great partnership. The two have been making beautiful music for years together. Need proof, check out Hov’s appearance on Tim’s first album.
